Increased Accuracy

  • Because the sonar data is collected from a fixed position, there is minimal movement of the sonar head when it transmits and receives the sound pulse. The accuracy of the sonar data is close to a bench test with fixed sensor and fixed target and is only limited by the precision of the unit.
  • This results in very accurate profiles and point cloud data. The manufacturer specs state – range resolution of 1 m – 4 m: 2 mm (0.08”) accuracy, 5 m & up: 10 mm (0.4”) accuracy.
  • The useful range is up to 50 meters although ranges of over 120 meters can be collected.

Onscreen image showing unknown sink hole

Details of Sink Hole 30
• This sink hole was renamed S14 seen in the green surface map above.

• The sink hole is found in the top left of the title image.

• This sink hole was found to be 14 meters deep and compromised the saddle dam.

Surveying Infrastructure since 2007 -The above sinkhole survey was conducted through the ice using our 3D sonar system.

  • These images show how our techniques were instrumental in finding a previously undiscovered sink hole that was outside the survey area.
  • Using a long range scan the deep sink hole was noted during the main survey.
  • A new survey was set up in the new location, the survey results influenced the building of a new saddle dam.

Benefits of Stationary 3D Sonar Surveys

AQC Key Points:
• Tailor surveys to your requirements.
• Economical measurement techniques enable cost-effective regular inspections.

• Data can be used in CAD programs.
• Real-time on-screen review of sonar profiles allows modification of the survey.

• On-site assessment of unusual features that may require further investigation.

3D sonar through ice survey allowed for scour tracking over time.
• AquaCoustic was required to create an accurate CAD drawing of a plunge pool & scour hole, including any undercutting.
• This data was then compared to previous sonar surveys to evaluate any changes in volume or mesh.
