Depending on the accuracy required a Trimble Pro XRS (sub metre) or RTK GPS (centimetre) is used.

The photograph shows the scanning sonar head being deployed through the ice. A DGPS antenna was fastened to the top of the pole and gave sub-metre accuracy for the scanned images. The accumulated images were geo referenced and mosaiced in post processing.
